Size and location decide whether a chip or crack can be repaired. Under the industry repair standard, a bullseye chip up to one inch across, a star break up to 3 inches, and a single crack up to 14 inches long can be repaired. Damage through both layers of glass, a crack that runs to more than one edge, or a break over one inch in the strip right in front of the driver calls for a new windshield instead.

One of the biggest factors in the price is whether a driver-assist camera sits behind the glass, since the vehicle maker may require that camera to be recalibrated after a windshield replacement. In a December 2023 AAA study of three 2023 model year vehicles with that camera, replacement averaged $1,439.78, with $360 of that for the camera work. That figure is for camera-equipped vehicles only, not a quote. Rain sensors, heated glass, and a heads-up display also change the price.

Utah drivers who carry comprehensive coverage are generally covered for broken glass and windshield damage, but the deductible depends on the policy. Some policies include glass coverage without a deductible, and some insurers sell it as an add-on. Utah law also requires the glass company to give you a written and itemized description of the work and the amount your insurer agreed to pay.
