Benefits
A door that opens from only one side, or not at all, makes getting in and out harder, and a working handle puts that right.

Questions
A handle does not open the door by itself. It pulls a rod or cable that runs to the latch inside the door, so the handle can look fine while the link behind it has failed. Automaker service bulletins name release cables that kink, pinch, or come loose, and rods that slip off their clips. If the window in the same door has stopped moving too, that is a separate window regulator fix.
Often the child safety lock is set. Many vehicles have one on the edge of each rear door, and when it is on, the inside handle does nothing while the outside handle still works. The regular door lock matters too: under federal rules a locked rear side door must not open from its inside handle, so unlock the door first. If both are off and the door still stays shut, the cable, clip, or latch is next.
The price depends on which handle failed. Reaching an outside handle's cable can mean removing the trim panel and a second panel behind it. A body-colored or chrome handle, or one with an unlock button, is a different part from a plain black one, with a different price. Damaged glass is a separate job: car window replacement for a broken side window or rock chip repair for a chipped windshield.
Salt Lake City's airport averages 111.8 nights a year at or below freezing, so water that gets inside a door has plenty of chances to freeze in the latch. One door-latch recall added water shields over the latches for that reason. Semis and motorhomes sit through the same freezing nights, and for a new windshield on either one, see the semi truck and RV windshield pages.
Enter the vehicle's 17-character VIN in the federal recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or the VIN or license plate at checktoprotect.org. Recall repairs are paid for by the automaker, so a check is worth running before paying for a new handle.
