Signs You Need Windshield Repair

A small chip can often be repaired, but its size, its location, and how long it goes unrepaired decide whether repair is still possible.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Size and location decide whether a chip can be repaired. The industry repair standard allows a repair on a single crack up to 14 inches long, a star-shaped break up to 3 inches across, or a round bullseye up to one inch. It rules out a repair on damage over one inch in the strip right in front of the driver. Damage past those limits calls for a new windshield, whether on a car, a semi truck, or a motorhome.

Not usually, since most side and back windows are tempered glass that shatters into small pieces instead of chipping. Chip repair works on a windshield because its laminated layers hold together around the break, so a hit on side or back glass usually calls for car window replacement. A side window that is whole but will not roll up or down needs regulator repair instead, which fixes the part that raises and lowers the glass.

Whether the damage can be repaired at all comes first, since damage past the repair limits means a new windshield instead. Crack length matters too: the repair standard allows a crack repair up to 14 inches, but State Farm and Progressive both use about 6 inches as their limit, so your insurer decides whether a crack between 6 and 14 inches is covered as a repair. How your insurance policy treats glass decides the rest of what you pay.

In Utah, comprehensive coverage is optional, and the state insurance department says it covers broken glass and windshield damage. Some insurers do not charge the deductible for a repair, while others say it may apply, so check your own policy. It also decides whether a break-in that damages a door handle is covered.

As soon as possible, the National Windshield Repair Division advises, because a chip repair can keep the chip from turning into a crack. Under the repair standard, a windshield with a break holding grime that cannot be cleaned out should be replaced rather than repaired, so a chip left open to road spray can lose its chance of repair.
