Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Federal rules limit the damage allowed above the steering wheel, leaving out a 2-inch strip at the top and a 1-inch strip on each side. In that area, a crack is allowed only if no other crack crosses it, though the yearly inspection caps its width at 1/4 inch. A damaged spot is allowed only if a 3/4-inch disc would cover it and it sits at least 3 inches from other damage. Small damage may suit rock chip repair instead.

Federal rules require a commercial truck to pass an inspection at least once every 12 months. On the windshield, it checks the area above the steering wheel, apart from the edge strips, and rejects a crack over 1/4 inch wide or one crossed by another. It also rejects damage over 3/4 inch across or within 3 inches of other damage. A cab door window that will not go up or down is a separate fix under regulator repair.

A driver-assist camera behind the glass is one factor, since the vehicle maker may require it to be recalibrated after a windshield replacement. How the glass is held in is another, because some truck windshields sit in a rubber gasket and others bond with adhesive. On a motorhome, the same kind of camera can add to the price of an RV windshield.

Federal rules allow required decals only along the bottom or sides, within 4 1/2 inches of the bottom edge, outside the wiper sweep. Antennas and similar devices may go within 6 inches of the top edge, outside the wiper sweep. Safety technology, such as a collision camera or GPS unit, may sit within 8.5 inches below the top of the wiper sweep or 7 inches above its bottom. None may block the driver's view of the road or signs.

A truck whose windshield is set in adhesive has to sit until the bond is strong enough to drive on, and how long that takes depends on the adhesive and the weather. The industry replacement standard calls for the owner to be told that time before and after the install. For a work pickup, a broken tailgate handle goes to door handle repair and broken side glass to side window replacement.
